Say What #3

So I finally heard something say-what-worthy. A conversation between two old women at the library:

I know how to get rid of those stray cats.
How?
You put a little bleach in their kittie tuna. It'll burn up their insides right.
You shouldn't be talking like that--you're in a walker! How would you like it if someone did that to you.
They wouldn't.

Say What #2

A random conversation between strangers that I eavesdropped on today:

You look funny carrying a purse.

Yeah, that's 'cause I carry it like a man.

You need a bigger one.

Why so?

A woman could never get away with carrying something that little.

The only things men need to carry are credit cards and cash.

Women need to carry around tweezers, nail clippers, a comb, chapstick.

Well, me and my tiny purse are going for a walk now.

Bye!

Say What #1

In an effort to listen more and to become a better observer, I've decided to write down things I hear that strike me as interesting. I'm hoping I can learn more about voice from strangers, friends, family, co-workers, etc. and improve the voice and dialogue of the characters in my stories. I plan to do this for 30 days, starting today. Here's the first installment of Say What. I overheard someone say this at work during a presentation this morning: "Death brings on the smell of money."
