I heart the Society of Children Book Writers & Illustrators! This was my first conference and I'm so glad I was there because my friend Marie won an honorable mention for her YA novel/work in progress. My conference notes are behind the cut.

Congrats, Marie! Can't wait to see that novel of hers on bookstore shelves and in reader's hands!

I joined the Local Los Angeles (Westside) SCBWI meeting tonight at the library in Santa Monica. Can I just say they are the best group of observers I've ever sat with in critique! It was so awesome hearing their comments. A few people gave me some useful suggestions for improving the beginning of my novel.

I know, I know. I'm not supposed to start editing until 2008 but we all had to bring a first page of something we'd written recently. I didn't want to bring the short story I finished because I was more curious about the opening of my novel. It felt good to have some of my questions answers and doubts confirmed. I will be in a much better position when I start revising next year.

Now, I must sleep.

I've completed a new short story called, "Joy Ride." Actually, the title may change but I like this new story a lot. I also started outlining another new short story, which I will start writing this weekend.

I got my fat packet from the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI). I must admit that their discussion boards are rich with resources and intelligent discussions. I'm meeting with a group from one of the local chapters in Santa Monica next Wednesday. The meeting topic will be: Are you hooked yet?

Each person is supposed to bring the first page or first line of a short story/first chapter, or first paragraph of a query to read. Everyone will take turns and the group will critique the opening. We'll also talk about how to hook a reader in one of these openings.

Excitement!
