The subject of this entry will be misleading. I'm talking about politics--not baseball. Tonight, a good friend claimed that Barack Obama hit a double after giving his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. Two nights ago, after Hillary Clinton gave her speech (and I admit that it was a good one), this same friend said that she hit a home run.

Now let's compare:
Hillary = Home run
Barack = Double

I don't think so. For me, they BOTH hit it out of the park. If anyone hit a double, it was Bill Clinton. Don't even get me started...

A DOUBLE?! Barack brought it HOME. I was in tears and I don't cry over stupid shit. This man KNOWS that it takes a nation of millions to bring about change. He knows that he's up against formidable opposition between now and November 4th.

Like our great Civil Rights leaders of the not-so-distant past, he is willing to walk through that fire, come hell or high water. Barack's speech was all about reminding Americans what WE can do if WE really want change. As he said, it's not about him, it's about US.

In his speech, he said that we're not whiners, we're not complainers--we're doers and he's willing to lead that march all the way to Washington. Americans of all colors and creeds have forgotten that WE have the voice WE have the power WE have the control if WE would only take a stand for change, for community, for family.

A double?! Give me a break! This man bowled a turkey, this man hit a grand slam, this man straight up DUNKED on those who doubted he had the skills to come THIS FAR.

Seriously, how can anyone believe that Hillary hit it out of the park and think that Barack hit a double? Yes he spoke about big changes but he didn't say he could do it alone. He let the American people know that we have to do it TOGETHER. Those aren't empty promises if we each share this vision. As he said, our dreams are inextricably linked; we rise and fall as one. He knows these feelings of wanting change are "stirring" in many Americans, as he described. Now we have to ACT. We have to see him all the way through. If he hit a double, it's because OUR vision is shortsighted. That's as far as I'm going to take my friend's sports analogy.

Instead, since I'm a writer, I'll put it in these terms:

"Language is the city to which every human being brought a stone."--Ralph Waldo Emerson

You can take out the word "language" and replace it with just about any goal you can think of: peace, love, education...you all get my point.

If we don't start this dialog now, then our voices are lost in the fog of dreary, bleak mornings that essentially keep the sun from illuminating our days...our futures.

I agree wholeheartedly. I think that Obama has been beyond spectacular, not just in that one speech, but throughout this entire campaign.

Considering the crap he's had to deal with that, let's face it, a white candidate wouldn't, he's been remarkably poised, thoughtful, focused, and intelligent.

I think his speech is one of those that will get recorded for history and after he's been President (is it is both my belief and great hope that Obama will win), that speech will get taught in schools and collected in books and whatnot.

As for Bill Clinton's speech, frankly, I just can't really look at the man and take him all that seriously, because whenever I do I just think that he's looking around at all the women in the room tabulating who he wants to have sit on his Presidental Staff, if you know what I mean. I think Hilary should've divorced him.

Say it, sistah! I, too, was in tears last night listening to Barack. I thought his speech lived up to all of my expectations, and then some! Hillary did a great job, too. But as a speaker, she's just not in the same league. She did the best she could do.

But she's no Barack!

History is being made! It's so exciting!

This is such an exciting time and I can't wait to see what unfolds over the next 4 years. Barack seems like the real deal; I guess I'm just so used to being disappointed by politicians that I'm afraid that once he gets elected, all these beautiful goals will go away.

It's most likely that I've become extremely jaded over these past 8 years (only 8? It seems like a lifetime. A backwards, horrifying lifetime).

But I feel confident that this time it's different. I think he has the ability to bring this country to a level of respectability, poise, and prosperity that we haven't seen in far too long. *sigh* Is it November yet? :)

PS: That Emerson quote is beautiful. What's it taken from? One of his essays?
